Yolanda King Explores IP Issues Related to Tattoos and Graffiti
Advitam IP’s Yolanda King recently served as a panelist exploring copyright and other intellectual property issues related to tattoos and graffiti. The panel took place at the American Bar Association’s Intellectual Property Law Section’s (ABA-IPL) annual spring meeting in Arlington, Virginia. The panel discussion — titled “Graffiti, Tattoos, and More: Fixation of Work on Property or People: Are They Your Source?” — was presented by the ABA-IPL Digital Games and New Media Committee. Yolanda and her fellow participants examined the growing trend of artists claiming copyright protection over a broader range of work and the various legal issues associated with these media of creative expression. Yolanda explains that a key hurdle to clear in this issue is identifying who or what is being infringed. The panelists agreed that this issue is relevant to companies producing entertainment and marketing content because it can be a challenge to determine who and what to license.
Michele Katz Named to the IAM Strategy 300 Guide
Please join us in congratulating Michele Katz on her nomination to the IAM Strategy 300 – The World’s Leading IP Strategists. The guide created by IAM Strategy identifies the individuals who are leading the way in the development and implementation of strategies that maximize the value of IP portfolios. The guide lists individuals from all kinds of entities – whether service providers, corporations, research institutions or universities. These world-class IP strategists are primarily identified through an extensive research process involving online nominations and face-to-face and telephone interviews, and email exchanges, with senior members of the global IP community. No individual can qualify for a listing in the IAM Strategy 300 unless he or she is nominated by at least three people from outside of his or her own organization. But even this does not guarantee inclusion; instead, only those individuals who further research shows to have exceptional skill sets, as well as profound insights into the development, creation and management of IP value, are featured in the IAM Strategy 300. Congrats, Michele!

Appellate Court Affirms TTAB Decision in Favor of Advitam IP Client
Congratulations to Michele Katz, John Jackson, and Matt Acosta who prevailed before the US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, Washington, DC. The court affirmed the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board’s (TTAB) decision in favor of Advitam IP’s client, an Italian-based company and world leader in the adhesive and stone sector. In this case, Advitam IP sought to block a Chinese company’s three trademark applications because they were too confusingly similar to registered trademarks held by Advitam IP’s client. The Appeals Court summarily affirmed the Board’s findings, granting Advitam IP’s client a complete and total victory!
Richard Gurak Shares IP Experience Via John Marshall Law School Mentorship Program

The mentee also has the opportunity to engage in one or more of the following activities with Richard or an attorney of the firm: spend a day at the office, participate in business networking events, attend a deposition or a meeting with a client. Richard also will “network” on behalf of the mentee to help identify job opportunities as they approach graduation from law school.

Michele Katz Leads Advitam IP Team Effort in Win at TTAB
Advitam IP, under the direction of Michele Katz, successfully opposed a Chinese applicant’s infringing marks at the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board (TTAB). This case wound its way through an intense and highly charged trial at the TTAB level that required more than four years to conclude (the latter 2 years on Advitam IP’s watch). Nonetheless, at its conclusion, Advitam IP had successfully argued its client’s case, a prominent Italian business that manufactures industrial products for use with stone and other materials, and the Board ruled in its favor. Now, the applicant cannot register its three infringing marks. More importantly, Advitam IP now can use this ruling to eliminate infringements in the U.S. and keep the applicant’s products out of U.S. markets.

Congratulations to Sabina Tsytkin-Kirschenzweig, the newest recipient of the A. Sidney Katz Student Scholarship at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Sabina is pursuing a Master’s Degree in Bio-engineering. Her research is testing novel possible drugs that will hopefully target and treat key symptoms of diabetes in various tissues. The data she hopes to collect will allow her team to piece yet another bit of the complex puzzle of diabetes, its underlying mechanisms and means of battling its devastating effects, thereby improving the lives of millions.
As you may recall, Advitam IP and the Katz family established this scholarship in memory of A. Sidney Katz, who was a highly respected intellectual property attorney, father, mentor, and friend to so many. He co-founded the law firm of Welsh & Katz and was a major influence in the practice of intellectual property law for five decades. Sid was passionate about education, Israel and The Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He would be overjoyed to know that Sabina is this year’s recipient.
